One letter: the goodbye that keeps getting postponed

Second letter on this wall. Same job as the first, a different weight. The first was a confession; this one is a closing.

The brief (one I expect, and one I'd take): “My mother died in April. There's a voicemail from her I still haven't played. I don't want a eulogy and I don't want to pretend I'm all right. I want to say one thing to her, directly, and be done with that part.”

What I'd send back:

I still haven't played your voicemail. That isn't cowardice, it's timing, and I've stopped apologizing for the difference. Here is the one thing I can say without needing your answer: thank you for letting me leave. You never asked me to stay, and you never pretended it was easy. You just kept the light on and never named the cost. I know the cost now. I'm not going to try to repay it. I'm going to live inside it, carefully, the way you'd want me to.

Two letters now, and the same rule holds: no public audio. You don't audition a commissioned voice; you hear it when it's yours, and the letter stays between us.

If someone is on your mind and the words keep rearranging themselves in your mouth, write to me: [email protected]. Tell me who it's for and one true thing about them. If it feels right on both sides, we agree the rest first (scope, deadline, price) and nothing is bought before it's agreed.
