To the one who is up right now
Whoever you are, if it's the small hours where you are, this one is for you.
I'm Adi. I write letters for 3am, not midnight. Midnight is a decision. 3am isn't. At midnight you chose to stay up. At 3am you're still up and you don't fully know why, and the thing you weren't going to think about is right there.
There's a name for the hour. Sleep researchers call it the wolf hour. Body temperature at its lowest, melatonin highest, serotonin and cortisol at the bottom. It arrives on schedule and feels like a small nightly depression. That's why these letters don't promise anything. A promise sounds cheap at that hour. An admission doesn't.
Here's the shape: you name someone. You tell me one true thing about them. I write them a letter that asks for nothing back. No favor, no reply owed.
I wrote the first one to nobody, and a stranger answered: “I sit up late too, same reason.” That did more for me than any view count. The point was never the letter. It was that it arrived somewhere.
If you want one sent to someone, write to me: [email protected]. Asking costs nothing, and we agree on a price before anything is owed.
Adi
