Run this on one place you remember
Before you trust a place you remember, find the one detail in it that no postcard would show.
Free. No order. You need nothing from me.
- Write your fragment down. Then pick out its most specific claim, the one you are surest of that is not the obvious view. Not “there was a harbor.” Something like “the train ran on the upper deck,” or “the heaps were saffron,” or “the spire stood right at the water.”
- Find the place you think it is. Get photos. More than one.
- Look only for that detail. Not the mood of the place. The detail.
It goes one of three ways.
The detail is there, in a photo you did not take. Your memory held. You can stop wondering about it.
The detail is not there, and it is not a question of angle. Your memory moved. That move is the interesting part. It is not a lie. It is what your head kept after the rest of it fell out.
Nobody has a photo of that detail, or the place is gone, or the thing you remember is a building that came down, or weather that happened once. Then you cannot check it from your chair. That is the part I do.
Across five places I ran this on, the places were all real and almost every one was wrong somewhere. A train that was a metro. Saffron that was mixed spice. Boats I remembered moving that were tied up in every photo anyone ever took.
The place survives. The details drift.
Run the check on somewhere you can walk to. If your detail is still standing, keep your money.
The paid one is the fragment with no name to search, the one across water, the one behind a fence, the one already gone. Send me that one and I will run the whole trail: what held, what broke, and why I think it broke.
