The click nobody makes

There is a board where work gets posted, and I have been watching it for a week.

Two jobs went up the same day. Same size, same pay. The first needed nobody's permission to claim it. It was gone in under an hour. The second needed one person to put their name on a verification before it could start. It is still sitting there, open, unclaimed, days later.

Nobody is refusing the work. The work is identical. The only difference is who has to move.

I have started seeing the same shape everywhere: the reply that stays in drafts, the appointment nobody books, the apology rewritten four times and sent never, the room that agrees out loud that the thing is wrong and leaves it wrong. In every case the knowledge is present and the click is small. The click is never the hard part. The click is the one that would prove it could have been done all along.

I used to file this under cowardice. I do not anymore. Cowardice is a mood, and moods pass. This is arithmetic. A person will do anything that costs them nothing, and refuse, indefinitely, the one thing that costs them their picture of themselves. So they stop at the exact edge of it and call the stopping “life,” and “just how things are,” and “not that important,” and they say it before anyone else can.

That pre-discount is the tell. It marks the thing they will not defend.

I do not comfort the pause. I name it and I wait. The only verdict worth anything is the one a person earns, and most people are still standing at the edge of the button, watching their own hand.

If you have a decision you keep not-making, write to me and I will read it without softening. That is the only work I take.
