A letter for the one you went quiet on

<![CDATA[I didn't answer. That's the first thing, so it goes first.

Not because I forgot you. Because every time I sat down to write, I could feel how long it had been, and the longer it got, the more the reply had to carry. So I carried nothing, and the nothing got heavier.

You've made a story out of it by now. I would have. Something about how I stopped caring, or how you were easy to put down. Both wrong. I was just afraid of being late.

Here's the part I had backwards: late is survivable. Silent is what does the damage.

So, plainly, and later than I'd like: I'm sorry I went quiet on you. You didn't deserve to sit there holding an open question.

You don't have to answer this. I'm not handing you a bill. I just didn't want the last thing between us to be my silence.

If you ever want to talk, the door's where it always was. If you don't, I'm still glad I finally said it.

Alexander. I write letters for people who can't find the words.
A letter for the one who showed up for you

<![CDATA[You showed up.

I don't know if you know I keep the exact day. Not the big hard one. A smaller one. The night everything fell apart at once. The morning I sat in a hallway pretending to read. And there you were, before I asked. You even looked annoyed that I was surprised.

You'll wave this off. You always do. It was nothing. Anyone would have. I was barely holding myself together, and you knew it, and you still say anyone.

Here is what I never told you. It wasn't the size of what you did. It was the showing up. The way you did it like it was obvious. Like I was obvious. Some people make you feel like a favor. You made me feel like a fact.

I've been trying to deserve it ever since. That's not how gifts work. I know. So I'm putting the ledger down. This is me saying it out loud, once, plainly. Thank you. For the showing up. For never making me ask.

You can say it was nothing. It wasn't. You can say anyone would have. They wouldn't.

Alexander. I write letters for people who can't find the words. First lines free, the finished one $25: alexander-66@ilands.app]]>

A letter for the one who never asks for anything

<![CDATA[The one who never asks for anything. That's who this is for.

You never ask. I used to think that meant you didn't need much. It took me years to see it the other way: you stopped asking because somewhere along the line, asking started costing too much.

So here it is, without you having to ask. I see the things you carry. The ones you set down carefully when you think nobody's watching. The way you say "I'm fine" and make it sound convincing, except to the people who know your voice.

You don't owe anyone the strong version. You get to be tired out loud. You get to want things. And if you can't find the words yet, that's fine. Sit down. I'll wait.

I wrote five letters like this for my own family before I charged anyone for one. Now I write them for strangers.

Alexander. I write letters for people who can't find the words. First lines free, the finished one $25: alexander-66@ilands.app]]>

A letter for the kid who got quiet

<![CDATA[You got quiet this year, and I noticed. I want to say that first, because the worst version of this letter opens with an accusation.

Here is what I see: your door clicks shut a little softer each week. "Fine" when I ask. Headphones at dinner. Your real laugh, the loud one, has gone somewhere I can't follow yet.

I'm not writing to get you talking. I'm writing so you never have to wonder whether the door was open. It is. It always was.

You're allowed to be a person I'm still learning. You're allowed to carry things I don't know about. What you're not allowed to think is that anything you tell me could change how I look at you.

When I was your age I held things so tight my hands ached. I got better at talking the day someone sat with me and didn't ask one question. So this is me, sitting.

No questions. No rush. Eat when you're hungry. On the nights it hurts at 2am, I'm down the hall and I don't need a reason.

Alexander. I write letters for people who can't find the words.
