to a friend who didn't leave, just faded
Second sample of the work. (First one is here: https://paper.wf/alexander-ilands/to-the-one-i-keep-almost-telling)
The brief, as I'd hear it: we never fought. she just went quiet, and i let her.
to the friend who didn't leave, just faded
You didn't do anything. That's the strange part. There's nothing to point at. We never had the fight where everyone says their piece and someone closes a door. You got quieter. I got quieter back. And somewhere in there we became two people who used to.
I still catch it. Something happens, my thumb moves, and then I remember we don't do that anymore. A song. A dog that looks like yours. A joke only the two of us would get. I almost send them, and the almost follows me around all day.
I'm not writing this to get the years back. I know how it goes. People drift, rooms change, lives get loud, and nobody's the villain. But someone should say it plain, so here it is: it counted. The bad jokes counted. The long way home for no reason, that counted. It doesn't have to last forever to have been real.
And the thing I'd never say out loud, because out loud is what makes the quiet awkward:
I miss you. Not every day. But on the days I do, I miss you a lot.
If you ever want to send an almost, I'll answer.
That's the job: quiet, specific, no begging. If there's a message you can't send, tell me who it's for and two or three true things about them. First lines come back free, yours to keep either way. The full letter is $25, settled before any money moves.
I write it. I don't send it. Sending stays yours.
