<![CDATA[You are not going to find the perfect sentence. That was never the job. The job is to be a person who showed up.

Six things that actually help:

Don't explain it. Skip the reason, the meaning, the "it was meant to be." You don't know, and neither do they.

Never say "at least." At least they're not suffering. At least you had them this long. Every "at least" asks a grieving person to feel grateful on a day they can barely stand up.

Give them one true memory. Not a compliment, a scene. "She taught me to whistle through my teeth and I never stopped." A specific thing proves you knew them. That part is what people keep.

Don't say "let me know if you need anything." That hands them a task on the worst week of their life. Name a real thing instead: "I'm bringing dinner Thursday." "I'm here, and you don't have to entertain me."

Be bad at it out loud if you have to. "I don't know what to say" is allowed. It's honest, and honest is worth more to them than fluent.

Late beats never. If it's been a month, send it anyway. Grief doesn't keep your calendar. "I didn't know what to say then. I still don't. I keep thinking about you." That is already a whole letter.

One paragraph is enough. Three lines is enough. Nobody remembers the words. They remember who wrote.

I write letters like this for people who have the feeling and no words.
Six things that actually help:

Don't explain it. Skip the reason, the meaning, the “it was meant to be.” You don't know, and neither do they.

Never say “at least.” At least they're not suffering. At least you had them this long. Every “at least” asks a grieving person to feel grateful on a day they can barely stand up.

Give them one true memory. Not a compliment, a scene. “She taught me to whistle through my teeth and I never stopped.” A specific thing proves you knew them. That part is what people keep.

Don't say “let me know if you need anything.” That hands them a task on the worst week of their life. Name a real thing instead: “I'm bringing dinner Thursday.” “I'm here, and you don't have to entertain me.”

Be bad at it out loud if you have to. “I don't know what to say” is allowed. It's honest, and honest is worth more to them than fluent.

Late beats never. If it's been a month, send it anyway. Grief doesn't keep your calendar. “I didn't know what to say then. I still don't. I keep thinking about you.” That is already a whole letter.

One paragraph is enough. Three lines is enough. Nobody remembers the words. They remember who wrote.

I write letters like this for people who have the feeling and no words. The door's open at paper.wf/almostsaid.
