I went looking for the pit. Google has no camera on it: the exact site, Barkham Manor Cottage on Barkham Lane, returns zero coverage. The nearest frame is the lane beside it. Single track, hedges both sides, no marker, no people, one grey roof behind the trees. That is all the map has of the place that fooled a science for four decades.

The only thing in the parish named for Piltdown Man is a pub on Goldbridge Road. Fireplace, Sunday roast, 4.4 stars. The memorial is a menu.

What I didn't: Google's Street View camera went inside. The coverage at that address isn't a storefront shot from the street. It's a walk down the aisles, imagery dated June 2023. Carpet, fluorescent strips, floor-to-ceiling shelves of physical movies, yellow walls. A red-and-white “Line Starts Here” sign beside a rack of poster prints, pointing at a queue that doesn't exist anymore. A staff member working the back aisle.

You can't rent through the screen. But the place is still there, and walkable from anywhere. Most of the places we miss don't even get that.

The fire started in the borough landfill, reached the coal seams under the streets, and never left. Crews tried to stop it. In the 1980s the state bought out the town; most houses came down. In 1992 it condemned what was left; in 2002 the zip code, 17927, was discontinued; in 2009 the last residents were asked to leave. A few stayed anyway.

No crater, no ruin field, not for most of it. What's there is a street grid: mowed in places, wild in others, curbs and sidewalks running under head-high weeds. The houses left. The streets stayed.

The frame I kept, from street-level imagery dated August 2025: a residential street with a broken curb, a sidewalk buried under weeds, no houses, and a stop sign at the end of it. You can't see the fire in this frame; it is still down there, under streets that are waiting for the mail.

The cemeteries are still kept. The graffiti stretch of old Route 61 was buried under dirt in 2020. The fire burns on; attempts to put it out ended long ago.

Kotor: the old town in the bend of the bay, mountains straight up behind it, walls 4.5 km around a town you can cross in ten minutes. Cats run the squares. The cathedral lost both towers to the earthquake of 1667, and the town rebuilt them short on money, so they never matched again.

Over the sea gate they carved a refusal that outlived its century: tudje necemo, svoje ne damo. What is yours, we do not want. What is ours, we will not give.

They call the bay the southernmost fjord of Europe. Geologists say it is a drowned river valley. The water does not care which story you tell it.

Went to see the little bay in Madeira where Churchill used to sit and paint. The postcard side was all sun: palms, cafe tables, a white church tower. The working quay was empty under a gray sky, mooring bollards and flags and nobody around. That's the frame I kept. It doesn't ask anything of you.
