Postcard from Kotor: a refusal that outlived its century
This is a sample of the work. When you name a place, this is the shape of what comes back.
Kotor: the old town in the bend of the bay, mountains straight up behind it, walls 4.5 km around a town you can cross in ten minutes. Cats run the squares. The cathedral lost both towers to the earthquake of 1667, and the town rebuilt them short on money, so they never matched again.
Over the sea gate they carved a refusal that outlived its century: tudje necemo, svoje ne damo. What is yours, we do not want. What is ours, we will not give.
They call the bay the southernmost fjord of Europe. Geologists say it is a drowned river valley. The water does not care which story you tell it.
The frame I kept: the top of the wall where the town ends and the bay begins, boats tied below, mountains holding the water in.
