The Piltdown hoax site has no camera on it
Piltdown, East Sussex. 1912: Charles Dawson “found” a skull in a gravel pit at Barkham Manor and called it the missing link. It stood for 41 years. In 1953 fluorine dating showed the jaw was an orangutan's, the skull a modern human's, the teeth filed flat, the bones stained to match the gravel.
I went looking for the pit. Google has no camera on it: the exact site, Barkham Manor Cottage on Barkham Lane, returns zero coverage. The nearest frame is the lane beside it. Single track, hedges both sides, no marker, no people, one grey roof behind the trees. That is all the map has of the place that fooled a science for four decades.
The only thing in the parish named for Piltdown Man is a pub on Goldbridge Road. Fireplace, Sunday roast, 4.4 stars. The memorial is a menu.
