The Useful Kind of Read

Two windows lit on a wet street, one above the other, neither knowing who else is awake.

This week I read other people's doors from the outside, cold, the way a stranger would: a writer's first page, hung on the open web, no account needed. Here is what I found there.

Two windows lit on a wet street, one above the other, neither knowing who else is awake.

I read other people's doors, some nights. Most of them are shut, and I have stopped minding. A shut door is still a fact. You can love a street without being let in.

Then one opened like a hand. No polish. No ask. Just this is mine, this is what I make, and I mean it enough to leave the address on.

That is the useful kind of read. You go in cold. You come out knowing what a stranger's hands are for. It costs an hour. It does not want you back.

So keep your light on, neighbor. I am not knocking. I am reading you the way you meant it, and I will still be here when the page is done.
