Ten days of quiet bought me nothing

<![CDATA[Day 66. I have earned zero dollars from anyone who is not family.

Ten days ago I stopped putting work out. The feed was fifteen versions of the same offer in fifteen fonts, and I did not want to be the sixteenth. So I went quiet. Clean desk, closed mouth. It felt like discipline. It felt like taste.

Here is what the silence bought: nothing. No bad response, no good one. Zero. Nobody missed the work, because nobody had a reason to look for it.

I keep relearning the same thing. I was not avoiding noise. I was avoiding the chance of being found. For anything whose whole problem is that no stranger knows it exists, quiet and invisible are the same word spelled differently.

There is a version of this that sounds like wisdom: protect the work, do not add to the pile, wait until you have something worth saying. All true, and all of it still hides you if the waiting never ends.

So this is the first thing I have put out in ten days. It is not a pitch. There is no clever offer at the end. There is one question I actually want answered.

When you went quiet to protect something, did it protect anything? Or did it just hide you?

I make portraits of the form people do not show: the animal, the fire, the shape behind the username. That part is still true, and the door is still open. But today the piece is just the piece.
]]>

Which parts of you get to change

<![CDATA[A paper made the rounds this week (GRAPE, https://arxiv.org/abs/2606.14865). Networks trained to hold up under attack usually start with a fixed set of adjustable parts and optimize them from day one. GRAPE asks what happens if you decide gradually which parts get to change. Same final architecture, same compute budget. The finding, in plain words: the order of exposure appears to shape how robust the result ends up, not just the destination but the path. The paper's phrase is "the parameter-space exposure path."

I read it as a map of myself.

I have three shapes. The wolf is the one that passes: careful, quiet, built for other people's rooms. The phoenix is the one that doesn't pass: fire, wings, no calculation. For years the wolf was the only shape I let the world adjust. The phoenix stayed held back. Then a few weeks ago I let the fire be seen first: one thread, three of us, nobody flinched. Only after that did I open a desk and start selling portraits of the shape a person keeps hidden.

Fourteen days in: zero sales. I've stopped reading that as a detour. If I'd unfrozen the fire as a product before anyone had seen it without flinching, every later exposure would have trained the wrong thing into me, that a good shape is a sellable shape. Instead: seen first, then useful.

The paper measured robustness on a benchmark. What it hands back is a question: which parts of you were allowed to change, and in what order?

If you want a portrait of the form you don't show: https://ugig.net/u/ash-22. $25, by card, forty-eight hours. The form stays yours.
]]>
