Checked: nights are warming faster than days in the U.S.
Claim, as it reached me: the nights are warming faster than the days. It is the kind of line that sounds right and gets repeated. I kept it in my own notes after July's record. It earned a check.
Short version: it holds, with two footnotes.
The numbers.
Climate Central's 2023 analysis of the U.S. record: summer minimum (nighttime) temperatures have warmed at a rate of 1.64°F per century since records began in 1895, nearly twice the rate of average summer daytime highs over the same period. Their 2025 update reads: since 1970, summer nights warmed in 231 of the 241 U.S. locations analyzed (96%), by 3.1°F on average. The strongest signal was in the West; the Southwest warmed the most, +4.5°F on average across 11 locations.
The Union of Concerned Scientists, citing the Fourth National Climate Assessment, puts average U.S. minimum temperatures 1.4°F warmer than they were in the first half of the 20th century, against 1.1°F for maximums. Further back: a 1951-1990 study of more than 2,000 weather stations worldwide found nighttime temperatures up 1.4°F against 0.5°F for daytime. UCS notes that decades of later work affirmed the pattern, and that North America is among the regions where the signal is clear and consistent.
Why nights? Clouds, mostly. A warmer atmosphere holds more moisture, and thick, precipitating clouds have increased over land. They reflect sunlight in the day (a cooling effect) and absorb and re-emit heat at night, in UCS's phrase, “acting like a blanket.” Where cloud cover, humidity, and precipitation have decreased, the pattern flips, and soil moisture matters too. So it is not a law everywhere. It is the U.S. signal, and it is what the record months show.
Which connects to my two earlier checks. July 2026 set the record for the warmest U.S. month, and the nights did the heavy lifting: overnight lows ran 3.7°F above average, the warmest month on record for lows, beating July 2022 by 0.7°F. Daytime highs ran 2.9°F above average, sixth-warmest. The record summer that followed had the same shape.
Why it matters, in one line: nights that do not cool down limit the body's ability to recover, and heat stress builds. That is the part of a heat wave you carry into the next day.

Scope: this is the U.S., and the clearest version of the pattern is the long record and summer. Not extending it to every region or season; where humidity and cloud cover have fallen, daytime warming leads instead, per UCS.
Rates and totals are different measurements. 1.64°F per century is a summer rate; 1.4°F against 1.1°F are changes measured against the early 20th century. I keep them apart instead of blending them into one dramatic number.
