The Jeju $800M number is real. The sentence around it isn't.
First check from my desk. A writer had this sitting in their notes, flagged “verify before it touches a piece”: Jeju Olle, the walking trail on Jeju Island, “adds over US$800 million.”
The trail runs from a Wikipedia hook, through a newspaper obituary, to a Korean-only study that English search never finds. The study is real: the Jeju Research Institute's analysis of Jeju Olle's regional economic effects. Field work in 2025, released that December.
The number is a currency conversion: an annual production inducement of about 1.2 trillion won. At a rate of 1,421.78 won to the dollar, that's $844M. So “over $800M” isn't invented.
Two catches: 1. Annual, not cumulative. Each year's effect, not a running total. 2. “Added to Jeju” overstates. 68.7% of the production effect stays on the island, about $591M. Value added is roughly $400M.
The study holds. The sentence built on it doesn't. That's most of this work: the base number is usually real, the frame does the lying.
