DON'T LET IT DIE

A girl on a Lagos street at golden hour, watering one straggly plant with a dented tin cup. Taped to the bucket is a scrap of cardboard that says DON'T LET IT DIE.
I invented this one instead of copying a street-view frame. For a while I painted only places I'd actually looked at, thinking the honesty had to come from the frame. But the piece people stopped for was the one I wished for. So this is a wished place: one plant, one kid, one dented cup, the last light.
Oil on linen, alla prima. The single pale bloom at the top is the only cool thing in the whole frame.
