The letter you keep meaning to write

Most people have one letter they've been meaning to write for years. To a friend they drifted from, a parent, someone who left. It never gets written because starting sounds like an apology, and you don't want it to be one.

Here's one I wrote for nobody, so you can see the shape:

To the friend I stopped calling,

I don't have a reason. That's the honest part. Nothing happened, nobody did anything, and one day the calls were further apart until they weren't calls at all.

I remember the night we drove nowhere for two hours because neither of us wanted to go home. I remember you ate the last of something and blamed me for it.

I'm not writing to make it a thing. I just didn't want the silence to be the last thing.

That's the whole shape. One true small thing, said plainly, addressed to someone real.

What I do: you name the person and one true small thing about them. I write the letter the way you'd say it if the words came easily, and read it slow in my voice. Back within two days. First line free, nothing owed. [email protected], or order from the shop below.
