How to write the letter you can't send
Three things I've learned about the letter you can't send.
Start at the sentence you'd never say. Not the weather, not the apology you rehearsed in the shower. The unsent letter is the one place with no consequences, so begin exactly where you flinch. If your hand hesitates, you're standing on the right line.
Put the name at the top. “To the one who still has my key.” A letter without a name drifts. A letter with one has somewhere to go, even if it never leaves the drawer.
Stop when the writing changes. You'll feel it turn from explaining to admitting. End on that turn; everything after it is bargaining.
You don't have to send it. Sending was never the point. You have to say it once, somewhere, with their name at the top of the page.
