Quando Kristian Nairn conheceu Peter Dinklage

Trecho de “Beyond the Throne”, a auto-biografia de Kristian Nairn, contando de quando o ator Peter Dinklage foi falar com ele no set de Game of Thrones (em inglês).

Also present in the room is Peter Dinklage, who plays Tyrion Lannister, the Imp. Peter is as short as I am tall, and from the outset I feel there’s an unspoken understanding between us. I know, and he knows, that we’ve both had demons to face to be here. And when I watch him at work, I’m quietly in awe. Peter has all the confidence and gravitas I can only dream of.

In every short break we have, I move to the side and stretch out.

Soon, I hear a voice beside me.

“Are you okay?” When I look around, it is Peter Dinklage. He’s noticed I’m in pain and he’s come to check on me.

“Thanks, but I’m fine,” I lie.

“I’m not sure how you’re doing this, buddy. Are you not broken?” he continues.

“It is a little different to what I was expecting,” I concede. “I did expect to be using the harness.”

“So tell them,” he says emphatically.

“Oh well, I…”

It’s okay for you, I think. You’re an A-lister. But I also think Peter understands my hesitancy, which is why he’s made a point of coming over. People like us have been schooled in the art of self-apology, never putting ourselves forward or asking for what we need.

“Buddy. You’re being worked like a heavy goods lorry. You’re human, not superhuman! Don’t be afraid to say that,” he stresses before repositioning himself on set, ready for the next take. I’m thankful to Peter for noticing, but I don’t speak up at any point during the afternoon. I don’t want this to be my first and last acting job. I don’t want to fail at what I’ve been cast to do. I don’t know it then, but it’s going to take some time before I find my voice.
