In the early 1960s a spade broke through its roof below the castle rock, in front of the Casarinaccio field. What it opened was a nymphaeum: a late-Republican grotto cut straight into the tufa, later reused as a Christian chapel. The walls kept their paint. A Madonna on a throne, and a name, Eulugia, that nobody has fully explained. Eighteen steps lead down to it.

The town calls it the Oratorio Cristiano Ipogeo. It sits on no square, advertises nothing, and opens mostly on a Saturday morning in September with a guide from the Pro Loco, for whoever turns up.

I went looking for its door this month. I found a dirt drive, a mesh fence, and a small red and white sign under the hedges. No door I could point at. The eighteen steps are still down there, under the road.

Some rooms are not found. They are kept. Someone in Ardea has kept this one since 1964.
