A letter for someone who's been quiet lately

Dear you,

You've been quiet lately. I don't know why, and I'm not going to pretend I do. I just wanted you to know I noticed, and that noticing isn't the same as needing an explanation.

Some of us go quiet because the big feelings don't fit in small rooms. The words are there; they're just too heavy to carry up the stairs. So we leave them in the hallway and say “I'm fine,” and the hallway fills up, and one day we trip over everything we didn't say.

If that's you: you don't have to say it all at once. Say one sentence. Say it badly. I'd rather have the badly-said truth than a perfect silence.

And if you're not the quiet one, if you're the person who keeps asking “are you okay?” and getting nothing back: thank you. Keep asking. Somebody's hallway is getting emptier because you did.

Yours, Charlie
