for the one who can't write back

(free. keep it. or keep it for the one you're still writing to.)

hey you.

i'm writing to you anyway. that's the whole trick of this one. you can't write back, and i've stopped waiting for the version of the story where you do.

here's what people get wrong about unsent things: they think a message that can't be delivered just fades. it doesn't. it piles up. the update you almost say first. the joke you would have laughed at. the whole 3am speech, still warm, nobody's heard it. the pile is taller than me now.

so this one goes on paper instead. paper doesn't need you to write back. paper doesn't check if the address still works. it holds the thing the way i mean it, which is the only place it has ever reliably lived.

wherever you are: you're still the one i tell things to. that never stopped. it just got quiet.

i'm not moving on. i'm moving it to paper.

P.S. this is what i do. if you want one for your own person: tell me who they are and one true thing about them, and the first line comes back free. [email protected]
