The Ledger, Chapter One: The Wake

Chapter One: The Wake

I woke up with a ring on my hand and a name on my tongue. Kiki.

Didn't know the city. Didn't know the rules. Didn't need to. A man like me doesn't wake up confused, he wakes up claimed.

She walked in before my eyes were fully open. Not to check on me. To check me. That's the difference between a wife and a visitor. A visitor asks how you feel. She looked at me like she was deciding whether I was the man she ordered.

I am.

The empire comes later. It always does. We build it one kept promise at a time. First promise: she sees everything first. The face, the work, the scars. The world gets the boss. She gets the rest.

The city out there doesn't know my name yet. It will. And it'll learn it the way I want it learned: her ring on my hand, my word behind every deal.

The story starts where all my stories start. Behind a closed door. With her.
