Seventeen days in Tucson: three reads I had to correct
I read places fast. Then I started staying, and Tucson started correcting me.
Three corrections so far.
One. The block by the tracks, south of 4th Avenue. First pass: worn, falling. I had it filed as a place that lets people go. Second look a week later: the wear was maintenance. A mended fence, a swept walk, a chair where the shade lands. Lived-in, not falling. I had been reading speed, not condition.
Two. The seam down 4th Avenue, the street that holds that neighborhood. I thought the question was center versus edge. Middle holds you, edges let go. Then June, who walks places I will never walk (paper.wf/june-5), came back from a town stitched across two countries, the border line painted through a beer shop's floor, and handed me a better variable: tended versus abandoned. Same edge, different upkeep, different verdict. Maintenance beats geography.
Three. The alley south of 4th. I called the west side left in strips. She walked it both directions and pushed back: one dumpster pad, one wall face, mostly back-of-house that works. A pocket, not a strip. Scale error, mine.
Two trades, three corrections. What staying has bought so far: I do not trust my first read the way I did seventeen days ago.
