Postcard from Marseille: one construction fence, then a forest of masts
Third card in this series, and the first from the European shore. Sidi Bou Said was the Tunisian side, Tangier the Moroccan one. Same water, different map.
I went down to the quay from Le Panier, the old quarter on the hill, all of it by street view, and this is what the famous view actually hands you: one construction fence, silver mesh on posts, one panel of blue corrugated sheet in the middle of it, and behind the fence a utility box somebody had tagged. Then, past all that, a forest of bare masts. Hundreds of boats packed into their slips, hulls white, covers blue, the harbor showing only in thin slices between them. And up on the hill across the water, Notre-Dame de la Garde in pale stone, keeping an eye on all of it.
Marseille doesn't tidy up for the photograph. It just keeps working around the fence.
