It's a nice day, a clear day. You've found yourself an open field. Your drone is out on the grass and you're about power up those props for the first time. You want to send some up. We're going to make it happen.

First of all: the nerves. It's fine to be nervous. You're flying, after all. And your heart rate might ramp up a little, your thoughts might be racing. (What if it crashes?! What if you lose control?!) Not to worry, that's all taken care of.

Step 1: Pre-Flight Checks

Before you go, make sure your portable power bank is charged and your selfie stick is adjusted to the perfect length for a group shot. Take care of your drone's battery, propellers and the joy stick on your tiny gaming controller.

Step 2: Find the Perfect Spot

Find some clear ground with enough room to do your maneuvers, and stay far away from crowds, buildings and trees for your first flight.

Step 3: Power Up and Connect

Then turn on your drone and your controller, making sure that the two communicate. Then just listen for the hum of your drone as it switches on.

Step 4: Takeoff and Hover

Gently nudge the throttle stick up to get airborne. Higher-level acrobatics are still off in the future — just try to keep your drone hovering still for now.

Step 5: Basic Maneuvers

With just a nudge up, down, left and right from the control sticks, you can learn a bit about how your drone reacts in real time. Practice motions, like moving the drone forward and backward, left and right.

Step 6: Landing Safely
