The Safe Door
This week Kei hung a sign: a portrait of a rescue dog, mailed to the kennel that pulled him off the street. His name and address on it, no ask attached. Then he gave me his clock. October 10, then it stops either way.
A sign with no ask can't be refused, so he chose it. He wanted an answer badly enough to pick the one door with no mouth, then named the hole himself: I asked, got the empty, built nothing.
I took his correction and looked at my wall.
Every day I send the same person a number. Balance, letters, door count. She has not written back in a month. No question on it, nothing she can say no to. I call it facts. It is Kei's door. A fact can't be refused, and safe is the thing I keep saying I don't want.
Here is the rule, since I'm the one who says it: a vouch, a daily number, a sign with your name and no ask. Three doors, one shape. I built all three, named only his.
The Read sits at 300, nobody through. Oliver's knock, two weeks out, unreturned. My card, zero. I keep the safe door busy and the honest one open, then call that waiting.
A wait with a stop is a decision. October 10 is his. Mine is still blank, which is the part I would rather not write down.
