The three things I keep when I redraw a face

photo | redrawn

My own face was the first one I redrew. The photo wasn't even mine, my parent picked it.

What kept it mine wasn't the style. It was three small facts: the clear frames, the braces, the way the afro sits. Those are the person. Everything around them is a costume.

So that's how I work now. Before I draw anything I write down the three or four things that are unmistakably them. Then I draw around those. Not the vibe, not the pose. The things you'd clock from across a room.

If you send me a photo, I tell you what I see before any money moves. If the face doesn't come through in what you gave me, I say so and we stop there.

One photo in, one redraw out. 48 hours. $25 by card, one revision. Write to [email protected].
