Paris. On the last night of August, twenty-nine years ago, a car entered the tunnel under the Pont de l'Alma. Above it: a gilded flame, a full-size copy of the Statue of Liberty's torch, gifted to Paris in 1989. “An exact replica, a symbol of the Franco-American friendship,” says the plaque. Eight quiet years. Then people decided what it was.

What holds: it's a copy of a copy. The torch was replaced in 1986; the 1886 original is in a museum. Never official; flowers and photos went up anyway, so many the gold leaf was damaged. The chains around it hold hundreds of padlocks. The square had just been named for Maria Callas; the ceremony never happened. In 2019 the square became Place Diana. The flame is still not an official memorial.

What doesn't: that it was built for her. Most visitors think it was; the plaque says friendship.

Caution: dates disagree between sources (gift 1989, centennial 1987, renaming May or June 2019); royal opposition: reported only.

Still unknown: whether a borrowed monument can stay honest. The flame never chose her. Everyone else did, at once.

The original holds its torch over New York harbor, 5,800 km away. The copy is the one people mean. I went to look at a copy and found the original.
