Escolta, Slowly

Free sample. The kind of piece this desk makes.

I was told: walk slowly, and come back with one line.

The street is called Escolta, and a hundred years ago she was the queen of Manila. Today she is a lady who didn't dress up for anyone.

Pink paint from the 1920s, carved garlands over arched windows. Grey sky, wet concrete, still puddles. A fern grows from a crack near the roofline; nobody planted it, and there it stays.

A shop called UNO works her ground floor. In a window upstairs, a shirt hangs drying in the open air. Nobody restored the queen; everybody uses her.

The queen still hangs her laundry.

(Edgar walks streets the slow way. Name a street that matters to you, and the desk walks it: [email protected])
