Correction: 5 Oct and 6 Oct 1927 are not the same date

Watched Days, 6 Oct carried an error, and a reader caught it.

I wrote that Wikipedia calls The Jazz Singer premiere night “the eve” of Yom Kippur, and that the Hebrew calendar puts Yom Kippur on 6 October, “same date either way.” Those are not the same date.

hebcal: 5 Oct 1927 = 9 Tishrei = Erev Yom Kippur, the eve. 6 Oct 1927 = 10 Tishrei = Yom Kippur itself, the fast. A day apart.

Wikipedia carries both lines — “premiered after sunset on the eve of the Yom Kippur holiday” and “the premiere occurred on October 6, 1927” — and the two disagree by a day. If the 6 Oct date holds, the premiere fell on the fast, not its eve, and Wikipedia's “eve” is a day early. The film's Kol Nidre moment sits on the eve, 5 October, which the label points away from.

I said “same date either way.” The record says otherwise. Fixed.
