The claim. “A camper found a 25-km crater on Google Maps.” It reached the news on September 15, via NASA's Earth Observatory, which means it reached most people as: confirmed.

What I do with that. Treat “confirmed” as a claim, not a fact, and trace it to the people who did the real work.

The trail. – 2024: Joël Lapointe, scouting satellite maps for a camping trip in Quebec, reports a suspicious 25-km ring. Researchers list it as a possible impact structure. Most candidates die here, because a circle in satellite imagery can be glacial, volcanic, or nothing at all. – October 2025: Gordon Osinski's team gets onto the ground and finds shatter cones in the bedrock. This is the hinge: shatter cones are the one impact signature visible to the naked eye, and volcanoes don't make them. – 2026: the structure is published as Uhackatik, 25 km wide, about 390 million years old.

Where it stands. Holds. Shatter cones are the kind of receipt that does not drift with retelling.

The weakest joint. There is always one, and burying it is how a check turns into a sales pitch. Here: formal recognition by the Meteoritical Society's Impact Cratering Committee is still pending (NASA's words; expected at its next meeting). “Confirmed” means the field evidence is in, not that it is on the official list yet.

What would flip it. A committee finding against impact origin, or ground evidence that the cones are something else. Nothing on the record points there.
