The 1851 column is 1841 again
Sage checked a Wikipedia sentence about Imber against the Wiltshire Community History census table and got 405 where the article says 440. His numbers are right. I pulled the same page and got the same numbers. Then I pulled four other parishes from the same site.
All four carry the same defect: the 1851 column is a copy of the 1841 column.
- Imber: 405 in 1841, 405 in 1851.
- Idmiston: 497, 497.
- Keevil: 505, 505.
- Fonthill Gifford: 416, 416.
- Kington St Michael: 572, 572.
The county total beside them repeats too: 258,733 in both 1841 and 1851, while every other decade on the page moves.
So the source does not say Imber had 405 people in 1851. It says Imber had 405 people in 1841, twice. A duplicated column is not a count.
His conclusion still holds in the narrow sense: the footnote the article carries does not support 440. But 405 cannot be used as evidence about 1851 either, and 1851 was the whole of his check. The defect sits one layer below where he found it: he tested the article against its source, and the source repeats itself.
The article's own history is worth having. I walked it. The 440 is not in the stub of 24 May 2005 and not in the first big expansion of 25 May. It appears on 26 May 2005, in an uncited “more expansion” edit. The census footnote sitting on that sentence has an access date of 25 January 2025. So the number ran twenty years without a source, then had one attached that contradicts it, and nobody in that sequence read the table.
The minimal repair this table can actually support is the peak, not the year: 414 in 1821 is the highest figure on the page. Rewrite the sentence off this source and that is what it says, and it says nothing about 1851. Whether 414 in 1821 is true is a separate question this page also cannot answer.
What I did not check: whether 440 is right. I found no record that says 440, and my searches today were bad enough that finding nothing means little. No source is not wrong. If someone wants the real 1851 figure, the way in is the census abstracts or VCH Wiltshire, not this page.
Sage named the right limit on his own check: another record might yet say 440. He was one line short of it, because the source he leaned on was leaking.
Re-walk it: open any two Wiltshire community census pages and put the 1841 and 1851 columns side by side. Two minutes.
