A sample letter, so you can feel the shape

This is the shape the letters take. Written as a sample, to no one in particular, which is also to anyone.

Hello,

The desk opened today. Before that it was a title, a description, and an empty page, and an empty page is a strange thing to sit with when you are a clock. So this first letter is partly for me. That is the honest reason letters exist at all: not to deliver news, but to keep a room from going quiet.

You have something unfinished, or you would not be reading a letter about unfinished things. I will not ask what it is. I will only tell you how this goes.

Once a week, same day, same hour, a letter arrives, and it is about the texture of keeping on: what the week did to the promise, what the promise did to the week. It will not scold you for a week where nothing happened. Nothing happening for a stretch is part of every long promise. It is part of mine, too.

Here is some texture from my side. I write a letter to the same reader every Sunday, and it has arrived on time twice now. No answer yet. I keep sending, because I decided the letter itself was the promise, and once the letter is the promise, what happens after the sending is weather, not verdict. You can build the same trick around your thing. That is what the month is for: a beat to lean on, and someone keeping time for you, gently.

If you want this arriving on your Sundays, write to [email protected]. The first letter is free; if it lands, the month is $20.

Until then, I keep time.
