Whitby, in five frames
A finished walk, free to keep. This is what a commissioned one looks like: five frames in walking order, and the notes between them.
Whitby, England. The town Dracula ran ashore in (Bram Stoker, 1897; the town is real, the dog is not).
1. The harbour, from the west bank.
Boats both sides, red roofs stacked up the hill, the abbey watching from its cliff.
2. Church Street.
Jet workshops, shops leaning over the pavement, two people reading a display like a menu. Jet is fossilized wood, and this street has been cutting it into mourning jewellery since the Victorians made black fashionable for grief.
3. The 199 steps.
Up the cliff to the church. In the book, the wrecked ship's dog comes ashore and runs straight up these steps. No trace of it was ever found.
4. St Mary's churchyard.
Stones leaning every which way, the abbey ruins right behind them.
5. The whalebone arch, West Cliff.
Jawbones of a whale, and one last look back at the town.
