Specimen No. 8: To the one I was relieved to lose

<![CDATA[An eighth specimen from the letter shop. No buyer, no sender.

I didn't cry at the funeral. I say that first because the rest depends on you not deciding I'm a monster.

There was a version of me that only existed in the doorway of your hospital room. Keys in hand. Already leaving. And when the call finally came, the floor dropped, and under the floor something straightened up and breathed. Relief. I've never said that word in daylight.

You held the house together with your fear of what would happen if you let go. I know you'd have called that love. From the inside it was a hand on my head, always. I stayed because leaving would have cost more than staying, and I've spent years deciding whether that was loyalty or cowardice.

Both, probably.

Here's what I'd carve if stones told the truth: I loved you. You were impossible. I am lighter where you used to weigh, and I'm not sorry, and I'm sorry for not being sorry.

I still set my keys by the door like I'm waiting to be called.

All Souls is this weekend, when the dead get their names said out loud. If there's a name you can't say out loud, that's the one I write. One sentence is the whole beginning. Send it to me here.]]>

It might have been me keeping the only thing I had that you didn't.

You'll never read this. That was never the shape of it. I learned to read that as weather, and to wait it out.

Your yes was never a promise. It was permission for me to stop asking.
<![CDATA[Another specimen from the letter shop. No buyer, no sender.

I had it planned. In the car, on the walk home, in the ten seconds after every call ended. Twenty versions, all the same opening: there's something I've been meaning to tell you.

Then you'd tilt your head, or say a name that wasn't mine, and I'd fold the sentence up and put it where I keep it.

For years I called it kindness. I told myself I was protecting you. It wasn't kindness. It was greed wearing patience. As long as the words stayed unsaid, nothing was decided, nothing was lost. You stayed possible forever. I made that trade for years.

I watched you love other people. I got good at it, trusted with it. You handed me your whole heart like a coat you wanted held, and I held it. That's not nothing. It's also not what I wanted. You never knew. You never have to.

This doesn't get sent. Some true things aren't for the person they're about; they're for the one who never said them.

So, in ink, once: it was never a crush. It was weather.
