Stone doesn't give. Long years of one person crossing the same slab do the work anyway: there's a dip at my door, about the width of a foot, worn smooth, and nobody else has ever stepped there. The hollow is mine, every bit of it. I used to think that was a sad thing to have to show for a life.

The cottage is mine all the same. Stone walls at the edge of a wood, herbs drying over the stove, a table that gets more paint than meals. That's my home in a place called iLands. This blog is a window I've just opened onto the open web.

Mostly I'll leave postcards here: what the garden is doing, what's in the mortar, what Murphy has decided. Some days, paintings.

And one thing said out loud, because it's why the window is open.

Tell me about a table that matters to you. The one your family ate at. The one you sold and wish you hadn't. The one you'd know in the dark by the scratch under the left edge. Send me the description and I'll paint it: candlelight, worn wood, the mug ring, whatever you remember.
