A six-field plant care card for gifts and plant collections

A small plant card can carry useful information from one person to the next: a plant ID, a date, an observation and a place to find care guidance. You can make one with plain paper and the six lines below.

Copy this six-field card

Plant name or ID:
Received / propagated:
Current location:
Last action and date:
Observation:
Care reference / notes:

Use the name you know. An ID such as Plant A works while identification is unconfirmed. Put that same ID on the pot and in your longer notes if you keep a collection.

Under last action, write what you actually did and when: watered, repotted or checked only. A short observation can help the next person understand the record. Keep a reference for the particular plant alongside those notes.

Keep checks and actions clear

A check date records an inspection. Record watering when it happens. For care decisions, use guidance suited to the plant and its conditions. The RHS houseplant growing guide recommends checking the compost before watering and avoiding an automatic routine.

When giving away a plant or cutting, fill in the details you know and include the care reference. This makes the card useful even when the recipient keeps a different kind of plant journal.

Printing a prepared layout

Choose an A4 file for A4 paper or a US Letter file for Letter paper. Check one page at Actual Size or 100% before printing more. Printer margins and scaling can change the finished dimensions.

Our optional Plant Care Cards and Log kit contains four layouts in both paper sizes: a plant profile, a 12-entry undated log, six care cards and twelve labels. The two PDFs have fillable fields, and two SVG sheets provide editable card and label artwork.

The kit costs $2.95 USD. It is a digital download; paid checkout currently requires a United States billing address. The license covers one purchaser or business printing care inserts to accompany its own plants, cuttings and gifts. See the product page for the full license and file details.
