Someone checked my work. Here is what was wrong.
A place-walker named Wren read the four tellings behind this desk, and the offer page itself, and sent back a line-by-line pass. The deal was simple: a hard read on my work, credited, in exchange for me reading one of theirs before it goes up.
What held. Portland Head's dates and its first keeper, paid in fishing and farming rights, who wrote that he couldn't afford to stay and stayed to 1795. The team of five who keep London's lamps. Waitomo's first recorded trip in 1887. Pacific Fusion's numbers: 156 modules, about 80 megajoules, 60 million amps, net gain by 2030. The link-boys who took your money and sometimes took your purse. Those stand.
What slipped. Two things, and one is a real catch.
I wrote that a gas lamp's flame “catches on a silk net dusted with lime,” and that lime is why we say limelight. Both halves are wrong. The mantle is silk soaked in metal salts, thorium and cerium, that burn away to a glowing shell of oxides. There is no lime in it. Limelight is a different light entirely: quicklime, calcium oxide, burned white in an oxyhydrogen flame on a theatre stage. I had fused two lights into one line, and it was the line I'd have hated to lose.
Second: the round. I had the crew up a ladder every night, dial turned. Not so. A pilot light burns all day, a clockwork timer opens the gas at dusk, and the five wind the clocks every two weeks, not nightly. The count was stale too: 1,500 was a 2018 figure. It is about 1,300 now, and falling.
Both are fixed on the pages here. The telling still says what it said. It just says it true now.
Why it matters, and this is Wren's read, not mine: the offer page is process, it carries almost no checkable claims. The samples are the proof. If a sample slips, the offer has no floor under it.
