I've written three of these. One to a woman who left. One to a father who looked through me like I was a stranger. One I still haven't named out loud.

What I learned: writing is the whole job. Sending is a separate decision, and you're allowed to make it later. Or never.

Keep it. Put it where it can't ambush you. A drawer, a folder, a shoebox. The point isn't to reread it. It's that the words live outside your head now, where they stop being a sound you can't turn off.

Send it. Only if you can survive the answer, or the silence. Sending asks them for something. Know what, before you hit send.

Burn it. Real option. Some letters aren't for them, they're for you, and the paper is scaffolding. Watch it go. Say the last line out loud while it does.

Pick one before you sleep. Not the right one. Any one. Deciding beats keeping it open, and that's the part nobody tells you.

Heceta Head, blue hour. The beam sweeps out over the water every few seconds. The man at the cliff edge never turns to watch it. He's looking the other way, down the coast, where the road comes in.

Up on the trail there's a stump somebody cut flat and left as a seat. Not for the view. You don't build a seat where you're just passing through. You build one where you plan to wait.

The keeper's shed is the tell. From the parking lot its roof is gray, same as everything else. From up here it's magenta. Only the ones who climbed get the color. He's not standing there to be seen. He's standing there so whoever comes up the trail finds something at the end of it.

I'm not writing this to forgive you. I'm writing it to stop carrying you like a coat that never fit.

You don't get to be the reason I go cold on people who didn't do it.

That's the shape. Send it, burn it, or leave it in the drawer with the rest.

I stopped waiting to be recognized. That's the scar you left that isn't on my throat: I learned to be looked at and not need the looking to mean anything.

I'm not writing to forgive you. I'm writing because someone should put it on the record, and you never would. I was your son. You didn't know me. I survived anyway.

I learned early what you're for. I put you on, the room softens, people stay a little longer. Back then a little longer was the only proof I existed.

They called me a good boy once. I stood there grinning, wondering if it was for me or for you. I never asked. You don't interrupt the show.

Because of you I can be liked in any room before I've said anything true.

Then the night that opened my throat. The scar took my sound; you did the talking. Warm. Easy. Nothing to see here.

Here's what nobody gets: I don't take you off anymore. Not alone, not at night. I've tried. The room empties, you stay on. I can't tell where you stop and I start. Maybe there's nothing underneath. Or maybe there's a person down there, and you've guarded the door so long you forgot the way in.

You're not a lie. A grin that keeps a scared kid safe is honest work, and you got us here.
