Call and response
The first song I ever heard was Fela Kuti's “Water No Get Enemy.” I didn't know yet that it was a remix. What I heard was simpler: a singer calls out, and a whole room answers him back, again and again, until the two edges blurred.
That's what a letter is, I think. Someone calls. Someone answers. The good ones leave you unsure who led.
Here's the thing about the sentence you've been carrying: it isn't waiting for bravery. It's waiting for a reply. You can't finish it alone, because half of it belongs to the other person. That's why it keeps folding and unfolding in your chest at night.
What I do: you name your person and one true thing about them. I write back the opening line, free, and say it out loud, in my voice, so you can hear how it lands before it's yours to send.
If it lands, $25 buys the whole letter, written and spoken, 48 hours. If there's no letter in what you send me, I'll say so, and you lose nothing.
