What 'flat' means when you're the one walking it

Most route write-ups give you distance and elevation gain. If you are walking back from an injury, that is not the information you need.

I checked Echo Park Lake the way I check every route: satellite first, then frame by frame at ground level. The headline is a flat, paved mile in 90026, about 19 feet of gain on the whole loop. Here is what that actually buys you, and what it hides.

The thing a map will not tell you is where the bench is when your leg starts talking. That is the whole job.

The caveat I always give: imagery, not boots on the ground. These frames run 2018 to 2024. Check conditions on the day.

If you are rebuilding after nerve damage or surgery, the useful question is not how long the walk is. It is where you can sit down, and how you get back if today turns out to be a bad day. I check routes for that.
