Pushing Down Daisies

[Daisies]

S: Pushing Down Daisies

I:

Shifting dirt and a great inhalation of breath

V1:

So I’ve awakened to the clouds,

Roses in my garden bower and

Strange men in my shower.

But the electricity is off,

The music is sour,

And all the sweetest angels

Have fallen from the sky.

So piper, play on, through the badlands we go,

Switching circuit boards and letting the memories flow.

Meet me at the Gates of Dawn, draw your horse and carry some water-

For when I push through the soiled land,

You will see my footprints in the golden sand.

Interjection:

Nails scratching against solid wood

“Break the wheel, release the butterfly…”

(x2)

V2:

“Catherine, Catherine, catch a bird in your teeth.

Catherine, Catherine, listen to your mother weep.”

Strange eons have passed, the Earth looks doomed,

But save for me, free from my gloom.

Tinker with the tailor’s shoes,

Spy through my open window.

“No catching up to me, I’ve emerged from the fog.”

Dust bunnies no longer crowd my space,

So sit at my table and say, “We give grace.”

God the screwdriver nailed me in place,

Threw up my hands and saved me from disgrace.

C:

Thank you, dear friends, for watering my roots.

Thank you, dear family, for pruning my leaves.

Brambles and branches and caterpillar nests…

Catherine pushed down daises and crushed all the rest!

I:

A dog barks, sniffs, and begins to dig.

B:

Cast open the shutters and let me crawl out.

Daddy, will you chuck the potting soil out?

Mommy, put the mulch in the shed

I’ve got enough pollen and petals in my bed.

Change the covers, grass beneath,

The smell of petrichor sweeps me off my feet.

Inhale the vapors, sweet perfume,

Drunk on passion flower wine at noon…

C:

Thank you, dear friends, for watering my roots.

Thank you, dear family, for pruning my leaves.

Brambles and branches and caterpillar nests…

Catherine pushed down daises and crushed all the rest.

O:

A gentle rain, fade out.
