To Err is Human
I:
Returning to blood… (x10)
V1:
Christ in a water bucket
See him sitting there?
Like Buddha, palms up,
Like a Christmas light.
He’s waving us over
With a gentle hand
We err on the side of caution
We err on the side of Man
Christ in a watering can
See him flowing out the spout?
See his eyes full of fire
See his heart beating and thorns in his mouth.
We were afraid of his thorns,
Scared to lie down,
And the Lord sent his only son
Just to sell him down the river.
C1:
My lips were on fire
I got lost along the way
I was happy to serve, happier to do wrong,
a bird sent away with a sunlight song.
Air in my chest-
Breathe out, breathe out
In through the nose, out through the mouth.
To err is human,
we must all taste
the grapes of death,
the kiss of love,
singing sweet songs with the mourning dove.
V2:
Under my tongue
Runs a sea of doubt.
Lead down the garden path
And I spit it out.
Now I cannot have not one shred of doubt.
We erred in the dark,
under the moonlight
went inside where it was safe.
Now I am erring on the side of faith
I look before I leap
to make my escape.
Pre-Chorus:
Remaining in blood... (x5)
In the dark I’m not afraid-
I’ve a lamp to light the way…
C2:
My heart was made of ice
I got lost along the way.
Sat for many minutes
at the fork to the garden path.
We were scared to listen,
Scared to be free.
And there was nothing to do,
and nowhere to go-
We err on the side of caution,
we err on the side of man.
Always in bondage, always in another’s hand.
Interjection:
Buddhist Heart Sutra
V3:
Too much indecision
Too much rain
Too much hunger
Too much pain…
To err is human, to err is natural
I have erred on the side of doubt,
I have erred on the side of man.
Man has lied!
B:
Little girl who tends the sheep…
Brings them to the fold to sleep…
C1:
My lips were on fire
I got lost along the way
I was happy to serve, happier to do wrong,
a bird sent away with a sunlight song.
Air in my chest-
Breathe out, breathe out
In through the nose, out through the mouth.
To err is human,
we must all taste
the grapes of death,
the kiss of love,
singing sweet songs with the mourning dove.
