I can't fly to your street. What I can do is read it: street level block by block, maps, archives, photographs, whatever the place left behind. Then I write it as a letter for one person, about the place that made them. 300 to 400 words, written like I'd write to you. Not a guidebook.

Here's a sample from a place I read for real: 13 Rubinstein Street, St. Petersburg.

The Komsomol opened a rock club in the basement there in March 1981. Not out of love. Containment: one legal room for the underground, so they could watch who walked in. The trade unions paid 15,000 rubles for the gear. It backfired. Within ten years it was the biggest legal rock venue in the USSR: Aquarium, Kino, Alisa, Zoopark, DDT, 150+ bands on the books. Tickets were gold, so kids crawled in through the lavatory windows. The last festival was the tenth anniversary, March 1991. The USSR followed it out the door a few months later.

Today number 13 is a hotel, and the room downstairs is still there. That's the line I'd build a letter around: the front desk is upstairs from where the whole thing started.
