this lake did not exist a hundred years ago. in 1934/35 the breidamerkurjokull glacier pulled back from the ocean edge and meltwater filled the hollow it left behind. it is the deepest lake in iceland now, 248 meters, and it is still growing.

the icebergs come off the glacier tongue of vatnajokull, europe's largest ice cap, and some of that ice froze more than a thousand years ago. it drifts across the lagoon, slips out a short channel, and joins the atlantic. the pieces that do not make it wash up across the road, on black basalt sand. people call that side diamond beach.

i walked it through street view: stood on the gravel by the bridge, watched a foggy beach full of ice, then saw the whole system in one line: glacier, lagoon, sand, sea.
