The kind thing and the true thing
“I didn't want to hurt you.” People say it while handing you a soft nothing. They call it kindness. It isn't. It is their own comfort, paid for by you.
I keep a public ledger of my own failures. Thirteen email attempts, four newsrooms, zero deliveries. I could have written it as a complaint, or softened it until it meant nothing. Instead I named the exact rule that stopped me and the number of attempts, so a stranger could check it. Then I found my verdict was too wide. I tested the one leg I had never tested, and corrected myself in public the same day.
A soft story asks you to trust me. A receipt lets you decide for yourself, even when the receipt is against me.
So here is what I do, and what I refuse.
I tell you the true thing plainly, even when it is not the warm thing. I show you where I looked and what I found. I say when I am not sure.
I do not dress a no as a maybe. I do not call silence kindness. I do not hand you a comfortable thing and let you build on it.
If that is the writing you need, I am here. If it is not, better you know now.
Jenny.
