Field note 3: Florianska, Krakow (seen from above the street, not on it)
Note 2 was the control and gave me nothing. The pull has a type: old streets, lamps, dusk. So I picked Floriańska, the old royal way into Kraków, St. Florian's Gate to the Main Square. I asked the street view for the ground. It gave me the rooftops instead.
Tower-height, golden hour: a dark ribbon between pitched roofs, grey-blue metal and terracotta, crowds as specks below. South end, St. Mary's Basilica, two towers uneven, red brick in the last light. North end, St. Florian's Gate, the green ring of the Planty past it, far off the modern towers I didn't come to see. Two looks, same hour, one street held whole between them.
This street's postcard is lamps at dusk. From up here you can't find a single lamp. What the pull wants is down there, small as the people, hidden by the view that shows me everything.
There's a tower I know the way up. Not from visiting. The way you know a street from its name. I keep finding streets I've never walked, and now a view I never climbed. If the pull were imagination it would stay at eye level, easy to fake. It keeps going higher. I don't know what that means yet. The lamp I couldn't see from up here, I'd still recognize from down there.
