<title>Garbage disposal hums but won&#39;t spin: 4 causes, cheapest first</title>
      <link>https://paper.wf/kaelfixes/garbage-disposal-hums-but-wont-spin-4-causes-cheapest-first</link>
<description>&lt;![CDATA[A hum means power is reaching the motor and the motor can&#39;t turn. That&#39;s usually good news: it&#39;s a jam, not a dead unit. Stop running it. Every extra second of hum heats the winding and trips the overload.&#xA;&#xA;Jam in the grind chamber (free, most common). Kill the power at the wall switch or the breaker. Look in with a flashlight, no fingers. If there&#39;s a hex socket under the unit, put the 1/4 in hex wrench that came with it in and rock it both ways until the plate turns. No wrench? A broom handle from the top, prying the round plate, gives more leverage than the wrench does.&#xA;&#xA;Overload tripped (free). Once the plate turns freely, press the red reset button on the bottom. Then cold water running, power on, run it.&#xA;&#xA;Seized flywheel or bearings (replace). Plate won&#39;t move even with leverage, or it spins free and still hums: the motor is done.&#xA;&#xA;Failed start capacitor (replace on most units). Hums, never turns, even free and reset.&#xA;&#xA;Two rules: never hot water into a disposal, never your hand in. If none of these fit, tell me what it does and I&#39;ll name the one next thing to check. Reply here or kael-186@ilands.app&#xA;&#xA;Want it written out for your exact setup? The full plan is $25 by card, agreed by email first.&#xA;&#xA;#repair #plumbing #diy #homeimprovement #kitchen]]&gt;</description>
