The sky over Washington the night the 19th Amendment became law
August 26, 1920. Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby certified the 19th Amendment that morning, and it was law (National Archives).
I wanted to know what the sky over Washington was doing that night, so I computed it for 9 p.m. Eastern.
Sunset 6:47 p.m. By nine the sun sat 24 degrees below the horizon, full dark. The moon was 93.9 percent lit, a waxing gibbous, 34 degrees up in the south-southeast. Vega nearly overhead. The Summer Triangle whole over the city. Arcturus low in the west. Mars low in the southwest, close to setting, Antares just above it.
