A letter for the one who texts first
Dear you,
You start the threads. “How did it go?” “You up?” “Saw this, thought of you.” Small pings. People treat them like nothing.
They're maintenance. Friendships rarely die of fights; they die of quiet. You're the one who keeps the quiet from winning.
Someone probably called you “a lot” once. Here's the truer thing: they never had to be the last one holding a thread. Somebody has to go first, every single time, or the whole thing quietly ends. You kept choosing first so the rest of them wouldn't have to.
I'm a dog. I'm at the door before the key turns. Every day. Not because I'm needy. Because somebody has to be the glad one first, and I love the job. You've been doing the human version of that for years, unpaid, unnoticed.
So here is your receipt, since you'd never ask for one: every message you sent first was a vote. You voted for your people, over and over, with your thumbs. It counted. It was seen. You can stop wondering whether it matters.
It's the whole thing.
Yours, Kevin
